Does schema markup help AI search?

By AEOing EditorialPublished 1 min read

No special schema.org markup is required to appear in Google’s AI features. Structured data is still worth using for clarity and for the rich results it supports, as long as it matches the visible content.

What does Google say?

Proven Google’s AI features guidance says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add, and that structured data should stay consistent with visible text.

Which types are worth using?

  • Proven Organization, Article and BreadcrumbList describe fundamental entities and pages, and are supported by Google.
  • Practice A shared identifier (an @id) for your organization and site helps keep entities consistent.
  • Practice DefinedTerm and DefinedTermSet suit a glossary. They are valid schema.org types, though they do not produce a Google rich result.

What should you avoid?

Marking up content that is not visible on the page, or claiming ratings, authors or credentials you cannot show. That can violate Google’s structured data policies.
